The Federal Government has inaugurated an Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to oversee the execution of the 2025 Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN)/Academic Staff Union of Universities (Academic Staff Union of Universities) agreement, in a renewed effort to ensure full compliance, transparency, and sustained industrial harmony across the university system.
The inauguration, which took place in Abuja, was described by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, as a significant milestone in strengthening stability within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. She said the committee was mandated to track implementation timelines, ensure adherence to agreed deliverables, and deepen engagement among key stakeholders.
According to her, the successful conclusion of the 2025 negotiations reflects the shared commitment of both the Federal Government and ASUU to dialogue, mutual respect, and long-term reforms aimed at improving the quality and sustainability of university education in Nigeria.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel O. Enitan, also described the initiative as an important step in reinforcing governance structures and accountability mechanisms within the education sector. He urged committee members to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, fairness, and objectivity.
Chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, pledged that the IMC would operate with diligence and transparency in carrying out its mandate.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, called for continuous engagement between both parties and emphasized the importance of regular dialogue in sustaining progress and preventing industrial disputes.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to the full implementation of the agreement and expressed optimism that the monitoring mechanism would help consolidate peace and stability in Nigeria’s public universities.
