The Police have questioned Lere Olayinka, media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over allegations relating to the leak of voter data from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal.
Olayinka was interrogated on Tuesday by operatives of the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) at the Police Headquarters in Abuja, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
The probe reportedly centres on alleged cyber-related offences, unauthorised access to databases, and the leakage of classified electoral information.
An unnamed INEC official has also been detained in connection with the investigation at the FID-IRT facility in the Federal Capital Territory.
Sources said the investigation followed a formal petition filed on behalf of INEC, alleging criminal conspiracy, cyber intimidation, and unlawful disclosure of sensitive electoral data.
The police have not issued an official public statement on the matter at the time of filing this report.
Olayinka had recently shared screenshots on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), allegedly showing details of Nollywood actor Emeka Ike’s voter registration transfer from Imo State to the Federal Capital Territory.
In the post, he questioned the actor-turned-politician’s eligibility to contest for a House of Representatives seat in Abuja following recent political developments within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The incident has drawn attention to concerns over data privacy, electoral information security, and the handling of sensitive voter records in Nigeria’s electoral system.
Further details are expected as investigations continue.
