FG Backs Local Content Drive as Electric Vehicle Industry Forms National Body

The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the growth of Nigeria’s electric vehicle industry through policies prioritizing local content, innovation, technology transfer, and industrial development, as the sector’s manufacturers and assemblers formally constituted a national association under elected leadership.

Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Dr. Kingsley Udeh, represented at the inaugural meeting of the Electric Vehicle Assemblers and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria by Mr. Ibiam Oguejiofor, National Coordinator of the Strategy Implementation Task Office for Presidential Executive Order No. 5, said the government was working to ensure Nigerian expertise, materials, and enterprises occupied a central place in the country’s industrial future. He said the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology was collaborating with relevant ministries, departments, and agencies to institutionalize local content across clean transportation, renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital innovation.

EVAMAN President Mustapha Audu described the inauguration as a transition from a caretaker administration to an elected leadership structure, noting that within two years the association had secured legal recognition through registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission and built partnerships with government institutions and industry stakeholders. He said EVAMAN had expanded to include manufacturers, assemblers, charging infrastructure providers, renewable energy experts, researchers, and investors.

Zahrah Audu, Director General of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, said the federal government remained committed to building a modern, innovation-driven economy, and that the electric mobility ecosystem held potential for stimulating growth across manufacturing, renewable energy, logistics, infrastructure technology, and skills development.

Gift Agboro, Operations and Strategy Consultant at Leke Services, identified access to finance, inadequate charging infrastructure, lack of standards, and poor industry data as the major obstacles facing the sector. Ademola Ogunbanjo, President of Oando Clean Energy, represented by Senior Vice President for Technology and Innovation Adeyemi Adebajo, said the company had deployed electric buses as part of efforts to promote cleaner transportation and build public confidence in electric mobility.

The meeting elected a new EVAMAN leadership comprising Mustapha Audu as President, Al Amin Ibrahim as Vice President, Chinedu Ochinanwata as Secretary General, Ademola Ogunbanjo as Assistant Secretary General, Adeyemi Olukayode Kalejaiye as Treasurer, Celyena Okiyi as Legal Adviser, Ikenna Ayu as Head of Public Affairs, Chinedu Ekeh as Head of Research and Innovation, and Edward Ihejirika as Government Liaison and Policy.
