The Office of Digital Engagement and Strategy at the presidency has accused unnamed politicians of running a deliberate coordinated campaign to weaponize religion for political purposes ahead of the 2027 elections, warning that those responsible for spreading digitally amplified disinformation would be identified and reported to appropriate authorities for investigation.
The office said it had observed a pattern of manipulation including a fake audio clip falsely attributed to the president, a deepfake video falsely framing a religious leader, and other fabricated content designed to provoke Muslims against the president. It said the pattern was becoming increasingly obvious as the political season approached, with desperate actors manufacturing outrage and pushing emotional bait across social media platforms and WhatsApp groups to divide Nigerians for political gain.
The statement reaffirmed that President Bola Tinubu was a Muslim married to a Christian, who led a multi-religious nation built on constitutional freedom of worship, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence, and that his position had always been that Nigeria belonged to citizens of every faith and background who believed in peace, progress, and national unity.
The presidency urged Nigerians to reject divisive propaganda, verify information before sharing, and remain vigilant against attempts to destabilize national cohesion through digitally amplified disinformation. It said that in line with Nigerian laws covering cybercrime, incitement, public mischief, and the malicious spread of false information, digital actors involved in such activities would be identified and reported to the appropriate authorities for investigation and necessary action.
