NCDC Flags Lagos, Enugu, Borno as High-Risk States in Ebola Advisory as Regional Deaths Top 247

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a public health advisory to healthcare workers across the country, warning that Nigeria faces a high risk of importing Ebola virus disease due to increased international travel, porous borders, and heavy population movement across the region, even though no confirmed case had been recorded in the country.

The advisory, signed by the Corporate Communications Division of the NCDC, listed Lagos, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, and Adamawa as high-risk states because of their international airports, seaports, and border routes. It directed healthcare workers in these and all states to maintain heightened vigilance, strengthen preparedness measures, ensure early detection capabilities, and contact their State Ministry of Health or designated public health authorities for additional guidance.

The agency said 1,077 suspected cases and 247 deaths had been reported across Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, representing a fatality rate of 24.6 percent. The immediate objective of the preparedness efforts was to ensure every state and the Federal Capital Territory could detect, contain, and respond swiftly to any suspected case in the event of an outbreak in Nigeria.

The advisory covered risk assessment and national preparedness, transmission risks, infection prevention and control measures, and protocols for healthcare workers for early recognition and reporting of suspected cases.
