Ousmane Sonko Elected Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly

Former Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has been elected Speaker of Senegal’s National Assembly in a major political development that further strengthens the influence of the ruling PASTEF party.

Sonko, who was appointed prime minister by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on April 3, 2024, served in the role until his dismissal on May 22, 2026.

His election as head of parliament comes as PASTEF maintains a commanding majority in the National Assembly, controlling 130 of the chamber’s 165 seats.

Political observers view Sonko’s emergence as Speaker as a significant moment in Senegalese politics due to his strong support base among young people and his long-standing anti-corruption campaign.

However, the development has also generated constitutional debate, as Senegalese law reportedly requires lawmakers to resign from certain positions before assuming legislative office.

Amid the controversy, President Faye has reportedly approached Senegal’s highest court to seek clarification on the constitutionality of Sonko’s appointment as Speaker of the National Assembly.

In his inaugural address after taking office, Sonko declared that no government could exist without the support of PASTEF, underscoring the ruling party’s dominant position in the country’s political landscape.

The latest development highlights the evolving power dynamics within Senegal’s leadership following months of political tensions between Sonko and President Faye, both of whom rose to power on promises of political reform and anti-corruption governance.
