Senator Buba Quits APC for PRP, Cites Lack of Internal Democracy and Member Marginalisation

Bauchi South Senator Shehu Buba Umar has resigned from the All Progressives Congress and joined the People’s Redemption Party, saying the ruling party had become characterized by the absence of internal democracy, a lack of fairness, the marginalisation of genuine party members, and a growing disregard for the views and aspirations of grassroots supporters.

The senator announced his decision on Sunday, May 24, 2026, saying it had been taken after extensive consultations with political associates, youth and women groups, party stakeholders, and supporters across Bauchi South Senatorial District and the broader Bauchi State.

He described the PRP as a platform built on justice, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and people-oriented leadership, and said his move to the party was aimed at strengthening democratic governance, protecting the interests of ordinary citizens, and providing effective representation for his constituents.

He said Nigeria’s democracy could only thrive where political parties allowed fairness, equal opportunity, genuine internal democracy, and active member participation in decision-making. He said the time had come for patriotic leaders to unite behind the goal of rescuing the country from poverty, unemployment, insecurity, economic hardship, and poor governance.
