Oyo Buries Killed Teacher; Police Hold Six Over School Attacks

Family members, colleagues, and community residents laid to rest Assistant Headmaster Adesiyan Joel Adegboye in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, with grief, tributes, and calls for justice marking a funeral that reflected the shock felt across the state following the coordinated attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area.

Adegboye, 49, was killed when armed men riding motorcycles launched simultaneous assaults on Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A Primary School in Esiele. The attacks also resulted in the abduction of pupils, teachers, and a school principal. A motorcycle operator who resisted attempts to seize his bike was also shot dead during the incident.

At the burial service held at Ayegun Baptist Church in Ogbomoso, the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ Oyo State chairman described Adegboye as more than a teacher, a peace-loving, humble, and generous man whose kindness extended equally to students, colleagues, and the wider community. He said Adegboye had clothed the vulnerable, sheltered the weak, and left behind a legacy of service that no act of violence could erase.

An elder brother of the deceased, himself a teacher, called on government and security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those responsible, describing his brother as a pillar of the family taken by untimely death.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that six suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack, describing them as informants who assisted the abductors in navigating the terrain. The suspects were tracked through telephone conversations with the kidnappers and were apprehended at various locations by a joint operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Police, the Amotekun security network, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and Agro-Rangers.

The police said two teachers and one motorcycle operator had been confirmed dead. Investigations were continuing, with operational assets, tactical teams, and intelligence platforms deployed across the affected communities. Security officials confirmed that the abducted vice principal’s vehicle had been seized by the attackers and set on fire along a road leading toward the forest.
