Peter Obi Arrives South Africa for Spier Dialogue 2026, Advocates New Vision for Africa

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, to participate in the Spier Dialogue 2026, a major international forum focused on Africa’s future and the pressing challenges confronting the continent.

Obi disclosed that the event comes at a critical period when African nations are grappling with issues such as governance, democracy, economic inclusion, migration, urbanisation, and leadership. He noted that the dialogue would also spotlight the opportunities presented by Africa’s growing youth population and their potential to drive transformation across the continent.

The former Anambra State governor said he looks forward to engaging in strategic discussions with leaders and stakeholders from different regions, adding that he is scheduled to address participants on policy initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable growth and development in Africa.

According to Obi, Africa’s future should not be defined by poverty despite its abundant resources or by political divisions that hinder development. He stressed the need for African countries to shift from consumption-driven economies to productive economies, while embracing politics rooted in competence, compassion, and measurable progress.

During his visit, Obi also met with members of the Nigerian community in Cape Town, where discussions reportedly focused on recent challenges affecting African expatriates in South Africa. He described the engagement as productive and insightful.

Reaffirming his commitment to good governance and leadership reforms, Obi said he would continue to advocate for what he described as “a New Nigeria and a New Africa,” driven by integrity, service, youth empowerment, and people-oriented governance.
