Former Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has announced he will retire from professional football at the end of the season.
The 36-year-old defender, currently playing for Sevilla, confirmed the decision on Friday through a message shared on social media.
“After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life,” Azpilicueta said.
“I’m grateful for every moment — the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.”
Azpilicueta’s final professional appearance is expected to come on Saturday when Sevilla face Celta Vigo in their last match of the season.
The Spanish defender enjoyed a distinguished career spanning nearly two decades, winning major honours at club and international level.
He began his professional career with Osasuna before moving to French side Olympique de Marseille. In 2012, he joined Chelsea, where he established himself as one of the club’s most reliable defenders.
During his 11-year spell at Stamford Bridge, Azpilicueta won two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. He also served as Chelsea captain for several seasons.
Known for his versatility, Azpilicueta played across multiple defensive positions, including right-back, centre-back, and left-back.
At international level, he earned 44 caps for Spain national football team and represented his country in major tournaments.
After leaving Chelsea in 2023, he joined Atletico Madrid before moving to Sevilla last summer for the final chapter of his playing career.
