Tank Farm Owners Back Dangote, Call for Cancellation of Petrol Import Licenses

The Jetties and Petroleum Tank Farm Owners of Nigeria has publicly backed the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the ongoing dispute over fuel import licenses, breaking with the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association’s position and calling on the federal government and the NMDPRA to halt importation and cancel all active licenses, arguing that Nigeria currently possessed sufficient domestic refining capacity to satisfy national demand without importing.

In a communique signed by its Executive Secretary Olayiwola Temitope, the association said allowing uncurbed imports was economically counterproductive given the growing number of domestic refineries and that continuously granting import permits undercut domestic production and devalued massive local investments. It described absolute reliance on local refining as the ultimate path to true economic independence and energy security.

The association cited NMDPRA data from April 2026 showing that Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption surged to 51.1 million litres from 47.3 million litres in March, while actual fuel importation by marketers dropped sharply by 37.3 percent to 3.7 million litres per day. It said the Dangote Refinery was supplying 40.7 million litres daily to the local market, demonstrating that domestic production could handle national consumption without the need for imports.
