INEC Chairman Promises Improved Welfare, Better Clinic Facilities on International Nurses Day

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged improved welfare packages and better clinic facilities for nurses and healthcare workers as the commission marked the 2026 International Nurses Day celebration.

The promise was made during the grand finale of the 2026 Nurses Week organised by the INEC Staff Clinic, where health professionals, management staff, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the contributions of nurses to healthcare delivery and national development.

The event, themed “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” highlighted the vital role nurses play in patient care, disease prevention, and public health services.

Speaking at the event, Head of Nursing Unit, Nurse Mercy Ogunleye, described nurses as the backbone of compassionate healthcare delivery within the INEC Staff Clinic.

According to her, nurses continue to demonstrate professionalism, compassion, and dedication despite existing challenges within the healthcare system.

Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee and National Commissioner, Prof. Rhoda Gumus, commended nurses for their unwavering commitment to saving lives and serving humanity.

“Nursing is a work of heart. You are serving humanity and serving God,” she said, while stressing the importance of recognising and supporting healthcare professionals.

Prof. Gumus noted that International Nurses Day serves as an opportunity to appreciate the sacrifices and contributions of nurses in promoting quality healthcare services.

She also referenced the legacy of Florence Nightingale, describing the symbolic oil lamp associated with her as a representation of hope, care, and dedication in the nursing profession.

In his keynote address, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Dr. Ndagi Alhassan, reaffirmed the council’s commitment to strengthening nursing education and professional practice through strategic reforms and empowerment initiatives.

He stated that the council remained focused on advancing the nursing profession and improving standards of healthcare delivery across the country.
