Conflicting reports emerged on Thursday over the leadership of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF), following claims that Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma had been removed as chairman of the forum amid internal disagreements.
According to sources familiar with the development, the alleged decision was reached during an extraordinary meeting attended by several governors at the Ogun State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, shortly after the submission of President Bola Tinubu’s presidential nomination forms.
The sources claimed that concerns over alleged financial mismanagement, leadership style, and loss of confidence were raised against Uzodimma during the meeting, leading to discussions on his continued leadership of the forum.
Reports also suggested that Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah was being considered by some members as a possible successor.
However, the Progressive Governors’ Forum swiftly denied the reports, insisting that Uzodimma remains the duly recognised chairman of the body.
In a statement titled “PGF Denies False Reports of Removal of its Chairman,” the Director-General of the forum, Folorunso Aluko, described the reports as false, misleading, and baseless.
“The attention of the Progressive Governors’ Forum has been drawn to a false and misleading report circulating in some media platforms alleging the removal of its Chairman, His Excellency, Senator Hope Uzodimma,” the statement read.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the report is entirely false and without any truth. No meeting of the forum was held at which such a decision was taken.”
The forum further stated that the PGF secretariat had no record of any resolution removing Uzodimma from office, stressing that the governors remain united and focused on their responsibilities.
The statement urged members of the public and the media to disregard the reports, reaffirming that Uzodimma continues to serve as chairman of the forum.
The development comes amid heightened political activities within the ruling political bloc ahead of the 2027 general elections.
