Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reiterated his vision of a more united, secure, and productive Nigeria following a nearly two-hour closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Ibadan, as cross-party opposition consultations ahead of the 2027 general election continued to accelerate across the country.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting at the Oyo State Secretariat, Obi described the engagement as part of ongoing consultations with key stakeholders on national development and the need for political collaboration across party lines, emphasising that the discussions were driven by a shared conviction that Nigeria must work for every citizen regardless of their political affiliation.
“We have come to consult and to continue discussions with His Excellency the Governor on issues that concern the future of our country. My dear brother, the governor, and I share a common belief that Nigeria must work for everyone, and that is the focus of our engagement,” he said.
He stressed that the consultations were not political manoeuvring for its own sake but were aimed at building a more equitable and inclusive nation where success was determined by merit and hard work rather than personal connections or political patronage.
Obi’s meeting with Makinde adds to a growing series of cross-regional consultations that have taken him to Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and other prominent political figures in recent weeks, as observers note a pattern of bridge-building that appears aimed at constructing the political architecture for a credible 2027 presidential challenge.
