Public Service Is Not for Wealth Creation, Says Sanusi, Praises Otti’s Leadership

The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has said public office should be regarded as a call to service rather than an avenue for personal enrichment, urging politicians to prioritise legacy and impact over financial gain.

Sanusi made the remarks while speaking on leadership and governance, stressing that individuals seeking wealth should consider private enterprise instead of politics.

“Public service is an honour, not a place to make money. If you want money, go into business, not politics,” he said, adding that public officials are ultimately judged by their contributions while in office.

The monarch used the occasion to commend the Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, describing him as a model of purposeful leadership.

According to Sanusi, his long-standing relationship with Otti dates back to their time in the banking sector, noting that the governor’s performance reflects a commitment to sustainable development and good governance.

“I have known him for years; we worked together in the banking sector. He is building a lasting legacy in Abia State,” Sanusi said.

The former Central Bank governor emphasised that leadership should be measured by tangible improvements in people’s lives and the enduring impact of policies, rather than personal gain.

His comments come amid ongoing national conversations around governance, accountability, and the role of public officials in driving development across Nigeria.
