Peter Obi, Bala Mohammed Meet, Signal Political Collaboration

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, have indicated plans to work together politically, as talks of alliances ahead of future elections gather momentum.

The two leaders spoke after a closed-door meeting held at the Presidential Lodge (Ramat House) in Bauchi, where Obi said he visited alongside stakeholders from the South-East to explore areas of collaboration with leaders in the North-East.

According to Obi, the engagement is part of efforts to address Nigeria’s current challenges and chart a new direction for national development.

“We are working together to build a united country and secure a better future for our children. Nigeria cannot continue on its present path; we must reverse the trend for the benefit of all,” he said.

He stressed the need for unity across political, ethnic, and religious lines, noting that issues such as insecurity and the rising cost of living affect all Nigerians regardless of affiliation.

“Nobody pays less in the market because of political party or tribe. Insecurity and economic hardship affect everyone, and we must come together to solve these problems,” Obi added.

The former Anambra State governor also highlighted agriculture as a key driver of economic growth, arguing that Nigeria has the potential to generate more revenue from farming than oil. He noted that the North, with its vast arable land, holds significant potential for boosting national productivity.

“We must invest in agriculture and ensure farmers can return safely to their farms. That is how we build a more secure and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Mohammed described Obi’s visit as timely and significant, praising his message of unity and national development.

“He has come with a vision of unity and collaboration. We are ready to build bridges and work together for the progress of this country,” the governor said.

Mohammed added that the meeting was focused on fostering partnership, cooperation, and synergy among leaders across regions to rebuild national cohesion and strengthen governance.

The meeting comes amid growing speculation about possible alliances among opposition figures, as political actors begin positioning ahead of the next general elections.
